Event History:
The Considine Cancer Classic was started in 2007 by Sean Considine as a means of giving back and recognizing things that are important to him. The benefactors of this event are the American Cancer Society, the Amber Huber Memorial Scholarship Fund and the Sean Considine Foundation. Sean grew up in Byron, IL and played football for the Byron Tigers helping them win a state championship during his senior year. After walking on at Iowa, Sean parlayed his hard work ethic and determination into not only a scholarship, but also a fine college career that culminated in All-Big Ten honors as a senior. Sean also earned Academic All-Big Ten honors four times. In 2005 the Philadelphia Eagles drafted him in the fourth round. Sean became an unrestricted free agent at the end of the 2008 season, after spending four years with the Eagles. He signed a two-year contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2009.
In the past three years a variety of celebrities have participated in the Considine Cancer Classic including Chad Greenway, starting linebacker for the Minnesota Vikings, Nate Kaeding, pro-bowl kicker for the San Diego Chargers, quarterback Kevin Kolb and long snapper John Dorenbos both of the Philadelphia Eagles and several other professional and college football players and coaches. Past dinner highlights included the magic show of Jon Dorenbos “The Magician of the NFL” and a talk by NIU head coach Jerry Kill who himself is a cancer survivor. In addition, we honored local cancer survivor Jack Kuehneman and everyone was encouraged when he told his story. The live auction has included many valuable items including footballs, jersey’s and other items autographed by several current and past stars of the NFL including Adrian Peterson of the Vikings, LaDanian Tomlinson of the Chargers, Donovan McNabb of the Philadelphia Eagles, and Devin Hester of the Chicago Bears. The auction has also included tickets to the Chicago Cubs, Bulls & Sox & also to Milwaukee Brewers. This important event has raised over $120,000 for charity in the past three years.
